First of all, this post is marijuana free, so all you stoners get out while you can still walk. Or stay! These ten grassy concepts might strike your fancy! Everyone else: if you live in any of several neighborhood-based communities in the world, you deal with grass. You deal with grass between 0 and 12 months out of the year, if you’re in the right zone (or just don’t water enough!) Let Yanko take you on a journey between the blades.

Grass ahoy!

Designer: Sod-Ridden Minds of Yanko

1 ) O2 Unique Ticketing System by Gil Cocker You’ve been to an outdoor concert, right? You know how much nasty air gets turned into gas, right? Pretty stinky. What this particular bag does is act as both a ticket and a replenisher of clean air… with grass!

2 ) Rethink to Save the Los Angeles Water Supply by CalArts Design Team This kind of post is a bit of an oddball on Yanko as it’s primarily an advertising campaign. But it’s methods are purely industrial. Through wild and beautiful images promoting the use of real native plants and grasses in the area, CalArts students hope to save Los Angeles from itself!

3 ) Muwi Automatic Grass Cutter by Yuli Sung A lawnmower without the push! Let this device, what basically amount to a Roomba* for grass, cut with no helper, spitting out disks and balls of grass as it goes!

*I hope you excuse my name-brand association sin here, but I love Roomba and so does everyone else in the world looking for a real robot friend.

4 ) Timeless Garden by Francesco Castiglione Morelli and Tommasco Ceschi “A chemical reaction between mud and metal” describes the power source for this lovely hairdo’ed clock. Meanwhile, the grass provides the air with some fabulous brand new oxygen.

5 ) Nature on a Tape by Ji-Hye Koo Quite simply ready-to-grow grass on a strip, made for growing in any number of city-replenishing shapes and lollers. El oh el forever.

6 ) Ella Umbrella Stand by Simon Enever The umbrellas go in the top, the water trickles down the shoot, the water feeds the grass. Beautiful! The stand is made of acrylic in three easy-to-clean bits.

7 ) Astro Type by George Simkin Remember number 5 on this grasstastic list? That’s just strips. When you need lettering, you’re gonna have to call George Simkin. And George Simkin has not only grassy letters, but they’re astro-turf. So they ain’t going away any time soon.

8 ) Natural Year Phone by Je-Hyun Kim Obsolete technology waste no more! This naturalistic phone is Je-Hyun Kim’s perhaps impossible gift to the natural world. The hard components are recyclable, while the grassy hay is naturally decomposable. After 2 years it’s completely back to the grassy source!

9 ) Moss Carpet by Nguyen La Chanh Oh what a wonderful feeling it is to have blades of spring greens between your tootsies. “Made from imputrescible foam called plastazote, the mat includes ball moss, island moss and forest moss.” The humidity of the bathroom keeps it going just fine! Grass approved.

10 ) Lawn Fun from 3-in-One by Gustav Landberg All grass must come to an end. And what better way to do it than with industrial design ingenuity? It’s a lawn mower. And for those of you who live in 4 season locations like me, this orange monster converts to two other modes as well: leaf collector and the all-important snow blower. Another idea for 10?

Find more amazing lists on Yanko Design simply by searching for the number 10! — Although, that search doesn’t find JUST the lists, so you’ll have to sift through other fantastical designs on the way. Tune in next time for more grassaction!

Meerkat is a bright, colorful ABS beacon kinda thang that has the height, sex and age of the owner of a bicycle molded onto it. In transit, it fits as a mudguard to the cycle; and when parked, it can be removed (lifted up-over the seat) to fit as an anti-theft with the bike lock. Till this bit the concept is fine; the flipside kicks in on two counts: it relies heavily on a Good Samaritan to notice the theft and report it and what do you do with the mudguard when someone else uses the bike or you grow up!

If the Samaritan does take the trouble of capturing a pic of the thief (doubtful), then it can be used by the police and as Simpon puts it, “the data will then be filtered and directly uploaded and GPS stamped to a specialized, police monitored Google map which can be used as an evidence gathering system.”

Doubtful! Doubtful! Doubtful!

Deftly christened “Ella”, this acrylic umbrellas stand features a green patch of grass at the bottom. The drizzle of drops from your wet umbrella trickle down to water the grass, thus adding a green-quotient to the design. Constructed from three injection molded plastic parts, each screwing into each other at the base point to give a low center of gravity and to allow ease of cleaning when separated. Neat idea; but my only question: what happens to the grass during a dry spell?

Dimmers be damned; nothing quite sets the mood for some romance than candles. Setting them up safely is another big question. Ah, solution-time: Candle.amp Mood Lights, of course.
A heat resistant casing, dense material base, bottom heavy design (lowering the centre of gravity thus giving stability), polished stainless steel interior heat reflector and sustainable candles made from 100% soy bean complete this tidy package. Prop them over the place and enjoy a romantic evening….

Candle-specs include Soy ones that burn for 18 hours and are easily replaceable. The candles include a spring that keeps the wicks at a constant height; maximizing the brightness and minimizing the mess.

Turning the candles off is a fancy deal as well, its better explained in Simon’s own words:

Pressing the left button on the rear of the device rotates a refillable gas lighter component towards the wicks whilst a piezo switch ignites the fuel, creating a flame to light the candles.
Pressing the Right button rotates the snuffer, a bowl shaped component, which covers the flames and starves them of oxygen, putting out the flames with minimal smoke and no mess.

Since notebooks tend to go for sleek and shiny, here’s an alternative for all you traditionalists out there. The S-series notebook concept is made of wood. Yes that’s right, WOOD. Nevermind the weight and horrible heat insulation characteristics of the material, it’s supposed to look refined and sexy, at which it does.

The notebook sports one of those ultra-thin 4mm thick LCD screens, and at 17″ wide, there’s plenty of viewing room. The screen itself is backed by black acrylic, you know, to compliment that wood base. Catering to business users, the S-series is a tablet PC powered by Windows Vista.

Today’s range of phones leaves a lot to be desired in terms of design, the aim of the game being to cram as many functions as possible into a lumpy box of endless buttons.

The S-series however steps back from this approach and sets off in a radically different design direction by combining sleek, sophisticated styling with top quality materials all put together in a compact package, to make the whole experience of looking at and owning the phone just as pleasurable as using it.

The phone is aimed at people who want to stand out and make a statement, without compromising on features. Designed in such a way that almost every key feature, from using the camera to making and receiving calls, is easily operated without the need to flip out the keypad and waste time.
